Hi there.

My name's Matthew. I'm a designer. Or an engineer. Probably both actually. This is me at CES 2026...here's how I got there.

It started with a sign-in sheet.

Every morning that a student had a free period at my high school, they had to visit the attendance office to sign their name on a clipboard. One day I got sick of standing in line—and more than being inconevient, signing in interrupted last-minute study sessions, make-up quizzes, and talking with friends.

CheckPoint Student

It took a couple of months to get a prototype of what I called CheckPoint Student—an iOS app students use on their smartphones to sign in with CoreNFC.

Taking it to the National Association of Independent Schools conference

Over the next year and a half, I worked with Luke Graham to expand and optimize CheckPoint Student before taking it to Nashville to exhibit at NAIS.

Sunflower. Born Spring 2025.

CheckPoint Student was an incredible UX learning experience. It continues to help hundreds of students focus on what matters on campus. Sunflower does the same—it's a new kind of air quality sensor. One designed to help all of us stay present, creative, and productive.

Designing the hardware

330+ versions of beautifully organic enclosures. 3 custom PCBs, including a logic board with a CPU + wireless radio, sensor suite, RGB light field.

Building the software

Sunflower has no screen. By design. So a beautifully designed iOS app helps users understand data from their Sunflowers, share with others, and more.

We took Sunflower to Eureka Park at CES in Las Vegas. And incredible faculty members from La Jolla Country Day School came along for the ride.
